東北を中心に活動を続ける直木賞作家・高橋克彦の同名恐怖小説を原作に、彼の地元盛岡で真冬のオールロケを敢行して描いた土着ホラー。“人柱”をテーマに、古い因習に由来する謎の現象に苦しめられるひとりの男の恐怖を描く。 　　雪が深く降り積もったとある街。バイオレンスを売り物にしている小説家・佐藤英一は、亡き父が森で謎の麻袋を鉄パイプで繰り返し殴る奇妙な幻想に悩まされていた。ある日、英一は実家の床下から由来の不明な骨壺を見つけ、“人柱”と書かれた古文書とともに家に持ち帰った。妻・槙子が息子・隆を連れ家を出てしまい、英一ひとりとなってしまった淋しい我が家。英一は恩師、大野教授の助けも借りながら謎の解明を始める。しかし同時に、英一の周りで奇妙な現象が起こり始める。そして、次第に佐藤家を巡る過去の恐るべき事実が明らかとなっていく……。

Once upon a time, the birds and the beasts fought each other in a war. It was a terrible conflict, and the clever bats would side with the birds when the birds were looking victorious, and then they would become allies of the beasts when that side was winning battles. At last the war came to an end, the two parties reached an amicable settlement, and a great party of friendship was held. But when it came to the turn of the bats to perform in the program, their fence-straddling tactics were exposed, and everyone refused to associate with them. Since that time, the bats have been too ashamed to show their faces during the day, coming out only at night to flit silently around.

Smalltime coke dealer Tony owes some mobsters a substantial amount of money, so he convinces his beautiful girlfriend Joanna to do a little work as a nude model in order to make the necessary cash to pay off his debts. Unbeknownst to Tony, Joanna has decided to become a prostitute instead. Complications ensue after Joanna discovers that she likes and enjoys her new line of work.

Documentary focuses on 'Sona', the daughter of the director's brother who moved to North Korea from Japan in the early 1970s. Through Sona, the film shows the generation that migrated from Japan to North Korea and their offspring who were born and raised in North Korea. Sona's upbringing is quite normal, but the special aspects within North Korean society make their presence known in a subtle way. By showing the process of the migratory people establishing their identities within North Korean society, North Korea becomes a region that shows a universal view of human society in general and not just a closed society. This approach is a special feature of Yang. She adds normalcy through her depiction of a family to 'North Korea'; a name that we have come to regard as something quite special.
